This book deals with the laboratory aspects of the treatment of patients in intensive care. The physiological and pathological effects of shock and its effect on organ systems are discussed and a wide range of related subjects are covered. A series of case histories are presented to illustrate common conditions encountered on intensive care units including acute pancreatitis, respiratory failure, septicaemia and multiple organ failure. these serve to demostrate the interaction between intensive care physicians and the laboratory. The requirements and organisation of clinical biochemistry services for an intensive care unit, both in the centralised laboratory and on the unit itself, are also discussed
